That's it.

Hey folks, well, I have some disappointing news. I am returning home. I should be back for the weekend. Peace Corps/The Gambia and I have decided that I should 'Early Terminate for Medical Reasons'. The specifics would require a lengthy explanation, but basically, in order for me to get some medical attention sooner than later I need to come home. This isn't anything too serious more than likely. It's just that the bureaucratic higher-ups beyond the in-country level and I have differing opinions about the type of healthcare I should receive and, foremostly, when that care would be received. There are no hard feelings between the Peace Corps and myself. Obviously, I would rather be staying, especially considering the excitement I had for my site. However, the people within PC that need to know what is going on and why I am leaving know, understand, and support me with my decision. It is a bit devastating to have a year of anticipation and preparation come crushing down on you, but so it is. Hopefully, I will be able to reapply in time and start a whole new adventure... although all things indicated that here was going to be quite special. I hope to see all of you that I can when I get back to Kentucky.

Ben sorry to hear the news I know how frustrating that decision is. I am still having side effects from the lariam and am trying to get the rest of it out of my system. I also looked into another assignment in a country where I wouldnt have to take malaria prophylaxis, but unfortunately the PC has a mandatory one year waiting period just to reapply and start all over again so who knows at this point. Good luck to you and your travels and hopefully this will all work out for you one way or another. Darin

ben, glad to hear you made it back safe. it is hard to help others people when you can't even stay healthy while you are there. do not feel bad, we still have tons of opportunities as young people with a test for travel and adventure. please email me at goducksben@hotmail.com if you feel compelled. most of what i have to say is rather generic and you will hear it a hundred times between now and tommorrow so i will just leave you with this: your wildcats are overrated. good luck with anything you do.

Yaya - the Gambia became a little poorer the day you left. You will be missed greatly... Just so you know, not a day went by in Bambako when I didn't get asked the question: "Yaya lee?" Look forward to having you back on the continent soon.
